Best Friend at Twilight

Sunlight shining through the window pane,

Glittering and dancing,

Adding new life to these four walls.

Lighting up the soul with warmth and love,

But impossible to pin down.

Then the steady, stable rock beneath our feet,

No frills or thrills, only what we really need,

Secure, sure, dependable love,

That doesn’t leave,

But builds and sustains life slowly over time.

The sun with its charm and glitter and flare,

Is most adored!

But a life can’t be built on flittering rays of light.

The sun’s warmth is missed when gone,

With value and gifts so obvious to see;

Lighting up rooms and putting smiles,

On frowning faces,

Energizing and enlivening everyone around.

A rock can easily be overlooked,

For it is not glaring in our eyes,

Claiming our attention and affection.

A rock just sits beneath us.

Its gift, its value felt more with passing time.

Yep, still there.  Yep, still there.

 A rock goes nowhere fast.

Its strength and endurance uphold.

And as we age, and lose stamina and energy,

Unable to keep up, with all our youthful dancing in the sun…

The rock is there, providing a safe,

Steady place to sit and rest our weary bones.

Love’s resting place.

  1. How many times have we sat on a rock admiring the view and taken the rock’s existence for granted. A lovely poem and photo, Gilda, with lots of things to ponder.
